Family Room Before & After

| |

Today I thought I’d share our family room before and after photos and a progress update! Our house is very long and narrow, almost like a row house. When we moved in, the wall paint was a warm beige – the afternoon sunlight made the whole room look almost pink.

August 2018. Our first night sleeping on the floor in the house.

Here is the family room as of July 2020. It’s still a work in progress, but it looks so much more like “us”. Mark painted the 2 story walls Simply White by Benjamin Moore.

July 2020, family room updated with a mix of old and new. I want to replace the mirror above the fireplace, but I have a creative solution that may work to cover it up.

I made my own large scale wall art to cover the mirror temporarily. Come see the tutorial here.

It’s feeling like we’ve turned a corner with our DIY and decorating efforts. We changed our style just a bit when compared to our previous house. We’ve embraced lighter walls, natural woods and since the house is more traditional, my decorating style is, too. I still try to work in rustic items, and a bit of French farmhouse.

I painted the mantel (and tile) with chalk paint back in 2019.

Read more about the mantel makeover project – I also painted the tile. I didn’t paint the hearth because we plan to replace the flooring and this will be removed.

My very first chalk paint project was this pretty antique table. This is by far my most favorite furniture makeover.

You can read more about this table transformation here. It was my very first Annie Sloan project. All of our couches are from Ikea.

It’s taken some time to figure out the right furniture configuration that felt comfortable in this long, narrow house.

Looking back towards the kitchen

…a new furniture project!

The dinette and kitchen are all connected to this space. More about this space coming soon. I created this kitchen nook using thrift store furniture I found.

My “thrifted” kitchen nook. Damaged table = $40 // Thrifted chairs $10 each // Farmhouse bench $65. This replaces my big white farmhouse table which is being reused in my makeshift industrial craft room.

Remaining To-Do List (Main Floor)

Family Room

  • Add 2-story wall trim in family room
  • Planked ceiling in family room
  • Replace fan & mirror above fireplace
  • Replace carpet with wood floors

Kitchen

Dinette / Kitchen Nook

Bedroom

  • 2 story wall trim
  • Replace floor
  • Paint remaining walls & start on bath/closet

Paint has been my answer so far to keep our budget intact. Now we are planning more expensive projects, like installing flooring and revamping the kitchen. We’re installing beadboard wallpaper in the adjacent hallways (more on that soon, too!) And here is a hint of what our bedroom looks like from the kitchen island.

For those of you who love botanical art, a quick gallery wall seemed like a simple way to make the long kitchen wall look pretty while we figured out what to do with this wall. I purchased from Michael’s using an “internet only” coupon which reduced the price to around $7.50 each for an 8″ x 10″ frame.

To get my items quickly I arranged local pick up instead of shipping. My frames were ready within an hour. So simple!

Here are some of the purchases I’ve made for the kitchen over the years in case you’d like to try a new look for your home (affiliate links included):

  1. I love a great gallery wall too! This looks like a great update. X I popped over from the Pin Junkie Party.

  2. I love your painted fireplace surround and mantle! I believe you used Southern Gentlemen in the Rescue Restore Paint line. Is that correct? Did you do any sanding or other prep? It doesn’t look like you painted your hearth. Why? How much paint will I need to do approximately the same size area? It’s a great look!!!

Hi Frani – I didn’t paint the hearth because we are replacing the entire floor eventually so we will just tear that up. I’m also planning to either remove or cover the mirror. As for paint, it’s called “Garden Trowel” by Magnolia – found at Target. No prep, just painted because it’s chalk paint. I used less than a quart.

  3. Wow! The the family room update! Great before and after photos.

Thank you Paula – it’s getting there! Still a lot to do!

I’m totally diggin’ the colour of the mantel!!! Striking look, even with the white walls. Also how it indirectly compliments the focal wall in the bedroom!

Like your family room transformation. I have debated painting our white mantel but our room is south facing so always feels dark and the white seems to lightened up that end of the room along with white Ikea bookcases. How narrow is your room? I describe our family room as a bowling alley 20’x12’. In all the years we have lived in our home I have yet to find a furniture arrangement that I like or feels balanced. I’ve never tried a smaller sectional sofa but if I buy one more sofa that has to be returned my husband will not be happy. Any id

I have been looking for a couch and chairs like the ones in your family room. I’m afraid to order online because the chairs I have purchased in the past have not been what I was wanting when they arrived. Can you please tell me where you purchased yours?

    1. Yes our couches are the Ektorps from Ikea. They are discontinuing them so now is a great time to get the slipcovers, too. We have 3 of these couches and love them! The chairs were from Sam’s Club but I’ve linked similar chairs from Wayfair in the post.
